SOME World Youth Day pilgrims during the past week have summed up the impact of the event to me by saying that, at least for the time being, they no longer felt as though they were an embattled minority. Surrounded by hundreds of thousands of like-minded people, the idea that they might be a last, dwindling generation of practising Catholics – as most Australian media tend to portray them – was no longer plausible.
